On This Day, April 14

On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally shoots President Abraham Lincoln at a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. The attack came only five days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his massive army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, effectively ending the American Civil War. Loretta Lynn, a multiple gold album American country music singer-songwriter whose work spans almost 60 years, was born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky on April 14, 1932. She has received numerous awards and other accolades for her groundbreaking role in country music, including awards from both the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music as a duet partner and individual artist.
