Apple Keynote: What You Need to Know

In this month’s Apple Keynote address, Apple announced two new products and a boat load of upgrades. Let’s talk about what’s new:

iPhone SE

iPhone SE is Apple’s response to the public’s opinion that the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S+ are too large. Basically what Apple did was take the iPhone 5S (4″ display) and give it the same processing power as the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S+. At $399.00, that makes the iPhone SE the most affordable iPhone model in the iPhone lineup. If you’re someone who prefers a smaller phone or if you’re a first time iPhone buyer, this is the phone to get.

iPad Pro

Apple announced a smaller iPad Pro (9.7″ compared to 12.9″). It has all of the same credentials as the original iPad Pro with a few small tweaks. The price starts at $399.00 for a 16GB 9.7″ iPad Pro. Apple is also releasing a few new accessories for iPad Pro including an adapter for USB and SD cards.

Upgrades

Apple TV

An update for the Apple TV OS will allow users to search more effectively using Siri. Users will also be able to organize their Apple TV apps into folders for increased usability.

iOS 9.3

The new iOS 9.3 upgrade (which is available today for all iPhone users) will include app suggestions for the Health and News apps, upgraded usability for CarPlay, and the ability to lock Notes using your fingerprint.

Probably the most important announcement at this keynote (especially for our OverDrive power users) would be the addition of Night Shift. This new feature will change the color of the Apple device’s display to match the light surrounding it. Basically, Night Shift will adjust the color of the screen depending on what time of the day it is and what kind of environment you’re in. This ensures a more natural reading experience.

The Bottom Line

None of what was talked about today is earth shattering. The smaller iPhone SE is in response to the public saying that the iPhone 6 & 6+ were too big. The iPad Pro 9.7″ model is just a smaller, more affordable version of the iPad Pro 12.7″. The upgrades to Apple TV and iOS are mostly for stability and usability.

What we are seeing from Apple in the last two keynotes is a dedication to improving the user’s experience. This is good, because it is my opinion Apple may have bit off a little more than it could chew with a few of its new features. These new upgrades will allow Apple devices to work more seamlessly and with more of the features people want.
